Are you a list person?

A strategy for a simple way to connect with your students each week - send them a weekly task checklist to help them stay focused. It can be personalized for groups or individuals and can be handy organizational tool for them.  A great idea from Penn Hills teacher, Michael Whalen - send the lists out on Wednesdays to span tasks to be completed by the following Wed. Builds a weekend into the plan and saves students (and you) from crazy Mondays.

Collaboration and Pace - What would you do?

Robert Krogh has brought up an interesting challenge as it relates to online collaboration. What would you do in this situation... Imagine you have a student that is at an accelerated pace in an online course and is demonstrating complete understanding of the content. Other students are working at a slower pace. When it comes to a collaborative activity, such as a blog or discussion board assignment, do you…

New Features Coming Your Way

This is an exciting week for us here at blendedschools.net! No, not because it's Valentine's Day, although that's nice too. The exciting part is that our new course design is improving even more!

It's Flu Season - Are you Prepared?

Imagine that you wake up to tackle a day of work but soon realize that the flu has hit. You can't go to school feeling like this!  You're thinking about the tedious task of getting your classroom ready for a sub and writing the dreaded sub plans.  How can you put everything you do in a day into a simple set of steps a sub could make sense of?  How can you keep your students on-target and allow them to keep moving forward with your content without having to do busy work until you get…

Why Does Your New Course Look So Different?

You may have noticed that some of our new courses look a little different. You might be seeing a yellow ScL icon like the one pictured below, with a link beside it. You also might be wondering where all the content is in the lessons. Well it's in there - inside that simple, yet powerful ScL link.…

The Learning Objects Challenge

If you saw Deanna's recent blog post or email, you may have noticed an upcoming challenge we have for you.

If you have ever thought about developing a course for blendedschools.net, here is a way to try it out through a smaller commitment of your time. We are looking for teachers who are interested in creating small components of lessons, called “Learning Objects.” These…

What's New?

This week I traveled out to Ellwood City to work with teachers who are piloting a new online academy in their district. Wish they had a bit more time to adjust to the concept of teaching online and to customize their courses, but I'm thinking about them as they get ready to start their program tomorrow. I was most impressed with their energy, enthusiasm and patience during my two days there. EC teachers - remember to let me know how your first week goes,… Continue

Coming Soon - A New School Year!

As the school year approaches, many teachers and students are getting ready for the fall semester. I hope teachers and students alike have a strong, smooth start to their year. I have visited lots of schools over the summer and have worked with many teachers along the way. I'm looking forward to seeing how these teachers utilize the BSN tools with their students in 2010-2011! Have questions or need help along the way? Just send an email to help@blendedschools.net.

Thanks Tamaqua!

I want to thank the Tamaqua teachers and technology leaders for the great couple of days I spent in your district last week. These two days of training went smoothly and I have no doubt that these teachers will take off running with the BSN tools due to their positivity and interest in learning. Also worth noting is the high level of support that the administrators and tech staff are providing to their teachers. Clearly those involved are working together to move forward.

Help! Looking for Articles

The Perfect Ticket

Is it possible for a help desk to receive "perfect tickets?" It is absolutely possible! This weekend we received a series of "perfect" tickets. I deem them as perfect because they identify a problem and offer a solution.

When Christa, a teacher from Brandywine Heights School District discovered that a link in the Biology A course was no longer available, she reported the error to us by submitting a ticket. She also included the following: "For… Continue

Pete&C

I was lucky enough to be able to attend last week's PETE&C Conference in Hershey. My favorite part about going to conferences is meeting people from our member districts. I work with so many teachers through our Help Desk that I never actually get to meet face-to-face. At this conference, however, I met and talked with people who I have worked with on the Help Desk and it was nice to put a face with the name.

I also found it interesting to observe how people interact with our staff… Continue

Moving Forward

Last week I had the opportunity to work with Social Studies and Health teachers in Mt. Union School District. They are integrating BSN courses into their curriculum and learned how to customize the course content to fit their needs. We had a very productive two-day session and I think these teachers are moving forward, feeling a bit more comfortable with the BSN tools.

Each teacher in this training event brought with them a different level of tech experience. I can safely say that,… Continue

To Copy or Not To Copy

So, you're teaching a course from our curriculum (or you have made a copy of one of our courses for a teacher in your district). As you and your students begin working in this course you discover that some of the links aren't working or a video that was once there is no longer available. What do you do? How can you continue to teach this class that has a broken link or video that won't load?

Well, you have 3 choices of action you can take:

1) Tell us! Click that… Continue
